8 year old May is a true orphan; her mother died 4 years ago, her father cannot be found, and she has no relatives who can care for her. In a discussion about family May took a minute to think about the idea of family before she replied: “my mother is in Heaven and I know I have a father even if I don’t know who he is, but… Now my mother is Emmy (one of the staff mothers), Amree (Emmy’s husband) is my father, and I have many brothers and sisters.”
When Emmy told this story to the rest of the staff, she was in tears. She knew May saw the House of Love kids as her brothers and sisters but did not know May thought of her as a mother. This one interaction changed the entire way that Emmy interacted with the kids at the House of Love, she realized that it was more than just a job, it was Emmy’s new family as well.
